The USS Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
I was sceptical of the Star Trek rebooted movie universe but JJ Abrams
somehow succeeded to some extent only to pour some sticky brown stuff
all over it with the sequel ST: Into Darkness.
The most notable aspects for Star Trek: Beyond to me how the new cast
has aged. Simon Pegg looks like he is in his 50s, both Chris Pine and
Zachary Quinto look a lot older, even the late Anton Yelchin looked
like he had a receding hairline.
In some ways a mature Pine as Captain Kirk is a plus, he is less of an
overgrown frat kid in this film. The best character is still Karl Urban
as Bones McCoy.
The plot however in this film performs well as a popcorn film but makes
little sense. The crew are several years into a 5 year mission where no
one has gone before and end up going to a newly completed space station
for example.
A bad guy called Krall wants to lure the Enterprise to a nebula as it
is carrying an ancient artefact and wants to use it to attack the
Federation. However Krall seems to have no problems in attacking the
Enterprise and Federation without it.
The team perform well together and each contribute nicely to the story
but the main action is set on a M class planet, in fact I would not be
too far off by saying it is a glorified quarry which makes it kind of
cheap looking despite some extensive CGI.
However it is a straightforward space action-adventure movie, nothing
shouts 'only Star Trek can do this' at you although there is some
reflection of Leonard Nimoy's passing and a reference to the original
Star Trek crew.
